Stannard - Standard - Rock Fishing Charters

At times known by Standard Rock

Fishing Stannard Rock

Charter fishing trips to fish at Stannard Rock, which is often pronounced as Standard Rock, leave the dock at 5:00 am. Our fishing charter boat is ready to go at 5. We set the compass for Stannard Rock. The Stannard Rock buoy looks like a lighthouse (see photo of Stannard Rock below). Stannard Rock is the furthest buoy from shore anywhere in Lake Superior. (Read more about fishing Stannard Rock).

When the bite is on... time stands still...

Rising from the waters into the horizon, from a distance we see a mirage that comes into our focus as we approach... a lighthouse atop a rock, ageless, timeless, its solitutde mysterious... it beckons all who seek the thrill of the frenzied feeders, the lakers of this sunken island who come from the depths of Superior to feed nearer the surface, the shallower waters of The Rock... and we set the hook... they hit... one after another after another after another... THE BITE IS ON!

When the bite is on... time stands still... and time stands no stiller than it does at Stannard Rock (sometimes called Standard Rock and known to the fishermen who've been there as 'The Rock'), it is one of Lake Superior's most remote fishing spots of all. Here is where the great and grand Lake Trout gather from the deepest depths of Superior to feed. Lakers in excess of 60 pounds have laid their claim to fame in the records and brought a thrill unsurpassed elsewhere to their hunters.

On the appropriately patriotic day of July 4, 1882, John Pasque, the first keeper assigned to the light trimmed, adjusted, and exhibited the light for the first time. The Stannard Rock reef had been discovered by Captain Charles Stannard, for whom it was named. Captain Stannard was aboard a fur trading ship when he discovered the reef and the abundance of lake trout.

Today, Stannard Rock continues to stand vigil over the shoals it was built to protect, but does so without human assistance, since the station's light is completely automated with a solar-powered 300mm plastic lens.
